It spans the river Douro and connects the southern bank, where all the port houses and boats are located, with the main part of the city. The port houses are cellars where all the brands of port make and keep their produce, and where they give tasting tours(!). The banks of the river rise steeply, which is the reason for the bridge having two levels. One is several meters above the water, and the other tens of meters higher. It indeed has the typical signature of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, with all of those steel beams bolted together. A convex arc connects the two layers. This does not mean that a pedestrian can easily climb from one level to the other, although two `statues' suggest otherwise. Both levels have motorways and small sidewalks where the traffic thunders by really close. "Thunders", I say, because you can really feel the bridge shake, even though the traffic doesn't go that fast. The view from the bridge is really pretty: a winding stretch of river and the picturesque banks with typical houses and buildings. Don't forget to go here when you're in Porto (though it's hard to miss). %e *EOA* http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/eiffel/eiffel.html
