This bandwidth sucking newsletter is brought to you courtesy of the alt.galactic-guide Usenet newsgroup. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contents --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) An announcement 2) An apology about the announcement 3) My Fan Club - Paul Clegg 4) A PGG Questionnaire! 5) A few announcements for those of you who never read posts 6) Credits --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) An announcement It is hereby announced that this newsletter will be assuming a non-regular posting schedule until we get a few more volunteers. There hasn't been enough stuff to fill up a newsletter, so I'll just wait until there is. 2) An apology about the announcement Sorry about that...PLEASE contact me if you can do _anything_ for the Report. It shouldn't be so infrequent that you never see a report, if things really pick up on the newsgroup or something like that (Lots of media coverage.) we may pick back up to a "every 2 weeks" newsletter. (Bi-weekly? Bi-monthly?) 3) My Fan Club -or- How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Paul Clegg This summer, despite my absence (or perhaps because of it), Project Galactic Guide seems to have grown nigh immeasurably. The last time I checked, there were three fully functional WWW sites in place, at least two FTP sites, and many, many copies of everything floating around on various BBS systems. During this past year, I received several notes of appreciation from various people, and I shared the credit with everyone else. After all, I've written only about three or four articles of note, and that isn't much compared to the more than 250 (Grown to +310 now. - Ed) articles the Project has grown to include. One thing of note, though, was that those who actually made the effort to contact me and ask me about the project were not connected to the Internet. There was one person from Washington (state), I think it was, that mailed me a beautiful letter saying that he'd love an updated copy of TheGuide, and any new articles we had. He also noted that he'd download them, except that they'd shut his phone off. That's dedication. Another person in California called me all the way over in New Jersey to ask if there was a Fidonet BBS that carried the new software and articles. I set it up for him, and he downloaded it long distance from New Jersey, during prime rate hours. That's dedication. And a lot of money. I received a phone call anonymously from someone with a really thick accent of unknown origin. All they wanted to say was that we'd done a great job with Project Galactic Guide. I still don't know who it was. All together now: That's dedication. Just yesterday I was invited to chat via Internet with Pierre Mart, from Sweden. Actually, although he was very interested in Project Galactic Guide, he just wanted to test out his PPP connection's talk daemon. But hey, let's give him a big "That's Dedication" anyway. Jeff asked me to write something for the section issue of the PGG Report, and this it. I wasn't really sure what to write, or what needed to be written. But then I realized, something needed to be written to just tell everyone who's ever done anything for the project just exactly how froody and cool they are. Three cheers for Steve Baker! Hip Hip... Hooray! Three more for Roel van der Muelen! Hip Hip... Hooray! Three more for Jeff Kramer! Hip Hip... Hooray! And three for anyone else I didn't mention but really deserves it anyway! Hip Hip... Hooray! I know some of us have had our differences, and some of you probably think I'm an uppity, overbearing SOB with his head stuck up his arse. I just wanted everyone to know that I really do appreciate everything everyone has done, and that I don't really don't take much credit for the project (though if it'll get me a job when I graduate, you can bet the farm I'm going to put this on my resume...) Keep up the good work, everyone! ...Paul 4) A questionnaire There has been considerable debate about a few issues involving PGG, so here is a Questionnaire. Just mail it back to me, (E-mail or S-mail, just don't post it. Sucks up too much bandwidth. Our ISDN connection thanks you.) and I'll tally up the results, and have them in the next Report. 1. Press Cards _ _ I will really use my press card! I've got a check already made out for it and everything!!! _ _ I'd like a press card. I think it'd be something cool. Something to start conversations with cute girls/guys with. _ _ Other (write something) 2. Tee shirts _ _ I want my PGG TEE!!! I'm gonna fill my closet with them, and I'll wear it researching articles in Zimbabwe, and... _ _ Yea, a PGG Tee would be cool. Something to wear when I go out with the guys. _ _ Other 3. Article content _ _ I like articles with lots of facts and tidbits. Stuff that really helps out a hitchhiker when he needs it! But they should be funny too, but mostly facts... _ _ It's something to do on saturday nights. I sit down and look through my pgg archive. It's a good laugh. _ _ Other 4. Article length _ _ I like long articles, that take a long time to read. I don't care how many their are, just as long as their long. _ _ I like lots of short articles, with articles on every imaginable topic. _ _ Other 5. Seriousness _ _ I write an article every once in a while. Whenever I think something's funny. _ _ I write articles religiously. I go everywhere thinking that this could be a good article. I have my PGG Notepad with me at all times. _ _ Other 6. Technological prowess _ _ I think that we should keep up to date with technology. We should have teams that would develop programs for every platform on Earth. _ _ I think we should have a good collection of viewers, but develop one, and not keep updating them. Downward compatibility! _ _ Other 7. Article format _ _ We should develop a format and stick with that. Something that is up to date, and can handle multimedia. _ _ We should pursue every possible format, creating simple converters for articles. _ _ Other 8. Merchendise _ _ I wanna be able to go down to the mall and buy a PGG Towel. And I think we should have our own factory store... _ _ We should stick to a Tee shirt and a press card. We don't want to get into money matters... _ _ Other 9. Tee shirts _ _ We should have a black one, with the galaxeyeII logo on the front. _ _ We should have a white one, with PGG on the pocket (or around there) and some PGG blurb on the back. _ _ We should have both. _ _ We should have both, and a combo of the two... _ _ Other 10. Future _ _ I view PGG as a diversion, something I do for fun. _ _ I view PGG as a way of life. I think we should incorporate, and pursue every possible opportunity for expansion. _ _ Other 11. Comments: 5) Announcements for those who never read the posts -PGG Press Cards They are on their way, as soon as a few people give the nod. No word yet on availability. -PGG Tee shirts No word yet on final decisions. Public Opinion seems to be a black one with the galaxeyeII.gif on the front, and a white one with PGG on the pocket (or that area) and Some PGG type thing on the back in blue. -MacGuide Yes, a Macintosh Guide. It's currently in it's 1.1 incarnation and has xref capability, updating, etc. No index yet, although it's a great piece of work. Takes a while to update the database though. The author will be writing a article for us about it...I hope. The MacGuide is available on the Mothership at vela.acs.oakland.edu /pub/swbaker/macGuide/*.cpt.hqx. Since it's bin-hexed, you have to un bin-hex it. If your running on a unix system, try running 'mcvert' a program that converts .hqx to .bin. Then you need something like Stuffit Expander, or Compact Pro. -Others? Send them my way... 6) Credits Jeff Kramer - Lemming Herder Ryan Tucker - Hoopy dood and Ascii Artist Paul Clegg - The guy who contributed And all the people who proofread it...
